A 36-year-old woman who had been accused of raiding the bank account of an elderly Villager will not be prosecuted in the case.

Amanda Jane Warner

Amanda Jane Warner

Amanda Warner had been arrested last year after she allegedly drained $2,000 from the bank account of a 90-year-old Village of Mallory Square woman.

“Although there was probable cause for an arrest, after reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case the likelihood of a conviction at a criminal jury trial is slight,” the prosecutor’s office said in a filing in Sumter County Court.

“Based on the testimony at depositions the state cannot establish the defendant intentionally used the funds of the victim for her own gain. The state is unable to show, beyond a reasonable doubt, the defendant overstepped her fiduciary duty. The financial records are still outstanding and Wells Fargo has not responded to our subpoena. If additional information is received, the state may consider refiling. The state cannot establish all elements of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt,” the prosecutor’s office said in the filing.

A 19-year-old woman who earlier this year impersonated a law enforcement officer in The Villages will avoid prosecution in the case.

Ka'mesha Nicole Byrd

Ka’mesha Nicole Byrd

Ka’mesha Nicole Byrd of Eustis was arrested in January on a Sumter County arrest warrant charging her with impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert in The Villages after reports surfaced of a suspicious woman identifying herself as a law enforcement officer and approaching homeowners.

Surveillance videos from The Villages ultimately led detectives to a grey Nissan Maxima which had been borrowed by Byrd. A family member told detectives that Byrd has in the past identified herself as a police explorer and also an employee of a police department. Detectives interviewed Byrd and she admitted to them that she was the person who had impersonated a deputy on multiple occasions in both Sumter and Marion counties. Byrd expressed to detectives that she desired to attend a law enforcement academy and become an officer. At the time of her arrest at her home in Eustis, Byrd surrendered a BB gun pistol which is believed to have been worn during the offenses.

Byrd has entered into a pre-trial intervention contract which will enable her to avoid prosecution in the case. She will perform 100 hours of community service as part of the contract.

A Village of Bonnybrook couple was surprised to discover a family of Opossums living under their grill.

A landscaper had been working at the home of Dean and Betty Chickering on Saturday and alerted the couple to the presence of a mother Opossum and her babies. The mother had built a nest between the grill and the lanai.

Unsure of how to handle the situation, the 14-year residents of The Villages called Community Watch who advised the couple to “let nature takes its course.”

Nighttime fell and then the Opossums were gone the next morning.

Opossums have grayish-white fur and are about the size of a house cat. They have long naked tails, small naked ears, and a pointed snout, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Opossums prefer woodlands with lots of cover and nearby water. They are also common in urban areas, as they are attracted to almost any type of available food, including garbage, pet food, or cultivated fruits and vegetables.

Opossums are skilled climbers, often seen in trees and on the tops of fences. Females produce at least two litters a year. After gestation, the young crawl into the female’s pouch where they can nurse. At about 80 days, the young leave the pouch and often ride on the mother’s back. Young are weaned at 95 to 100 days and disperse to be on their own shortly afterward.
